Volunteer With Sharpsburg EMS 

 

SAEMS is a combined volunteer and career department, but volunteers are always welcome and very much needed! Volunteering is a both challenging and rewarding experience that provides an opportunity to have fun while learning new skills and helping out your community. Volunteers are needed not only to provide emergency medical services but also to assist with administrative duties and fundraising support. No experience is needed and training is provided free of charge.

Training required to become an active member who is able to respond to calls includes:

  • CPR
  • Haz-Mat Ops-basic knowledge of hazardous materials response
  • ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800-national incident management and command structure
  • Bloodborne Pathogens training
  • HIPPA training

Other training includes, but is not limited to:

  • Emergency Vehicle Operator
  • Emergency Medical Technician
  • Paramedic
  • Firefighting
  • Technical Rescue
  • Officer Training
  • Instructor Training

Benefits:

LOSAP (Length of Service Awards Program): Volunteers can earn a monetary award when they meet certain age and years of service criteria through a point-based program called LOSAP. After 10 years of service and when the volunteer reaches 65 years of age, stipends ranging from $92 to $345 a month are awarded. Points are earned through volunteer activities such as responding to emergency calls, participating in training and attending company meetings.

Maryland State Income Tax Subtraction Program: If a volunteer meets a certain criteria based on the LOSAP points system, they receive a $3500 credit on their Maryland State income taxes.
